Why do we learn science?

To start this off I will tell you the dictionary.com definition of science. It means the systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation. I think that the reason that we learn science is because science is really the study of life and everything around us(this is my definition). It is important to know how our world was created so that we can learn how to take care of it and how to keep it nice (even if we are not succeeding). I was reading a blog post that I found about this and it said that science teaches kids how to think critically and gives them the ability to discard bad ideas or theories. I thought that this was a pretty cool answer to this question. Also, if we didn't have science we wouldn't have plastic to make things out of or rubber. These materials took science to figure out their compounds and how to make them. In fact we would go without a lot of our things such as computers if we didn't have science.

I like your point about science teaching kids to think critically and discard bad ideas. We need this skill in life and we deffinely learn it more in science than any other subject.

wait to go using an exact dictionary definiton... we don't use those enough these days, too much speculation...

here's another definition.

Joke
–noun
1. something said or done to provoke laughter or cause amusement, as a witticism, a short and amusing anecdote, or a prankish act: He tells very funny jokes. She played a joke on him.

When mr. voight said we should ban water, it was a JOKE.

Although I don't blame you for wanting to give him a hard time ;-)

I think some how we all put "technology" into this (well ofcourse) but computers seemed to be a big example. I used it in my bog too. luke (http://st20soccerdude.blogspot.com) said that we use it in our everyday lives without noticing as you sort of mentioned it saying kids use science to make decissions and learn when to notice false theorys. I strongly agree with this. That's probably the best answer for this question. That's why is so hard to answer.

I like how you stated the actual meaning of Science. Without knowing what it actually means, you can't know what you are actually learning. I thought that was creative. I also liked your thoughts about how science teaches kids to think critically. I never thought about it that way. Great thoughts in your post. I also liked what Rob said in his post about how we use Science all of the time in our everyday lives and some jobs. I think thats cool that Science is not just something that we have to learn to get into colleges, but we can actually use it and apply it in our lives and everyday thinking. Great post.
